Proper formulations of galvanized paints and the best application brands
Iron, which is constantly in contact with the external environment, is often treated with zinc. This layer provides protection against moisture. However, over time, such a spray will wear off. Therefore, iron is recommended to be treated with galvanized paints, which create additional protection against environmental influences. At the same time, not all coloring compositions are suitable for this material.
Features of working with galvanized metal
When painting galvanized iron, it is necessary to take into account the requirements of this material:
- galvanized surfaces do not tolerate contact with aggressive substances (alkalis, acids, solvents and anti-corrosion additives);
- the paint must be elastic, since the metal expands and contracts respectively when heated and cooled;
- the adhesion of galvanized iron is weak, therefore, before painting, the surfaces are treated with special compounds (usually a primer).
Another feature of these metals is that zinc corrodes over time, regardless of the nature of the external influence (the so-called white rust appears).
Before painting iron sheets, a primer should be applied to the surface, which increases the level of adhesion. Moreover, galvanized steel is mainly used for exterior works. Therefore, the material is constantly exposed to increased loads, which shortens the service life of metal structures.
Coloring matter requirements for zinc
When purchasing paint materials for galvanized steel, it should be borne in mind that such products must meet the following requirements:
- the ability to withstand the negative effects of the environment for a long time (direct sunlight, snow, sun, etc.);
- the material does not fade in direct sunlight;
- increased elasticity;
- good adhesion;
- resistance to temperature extremes;
- fast drying.
Although galvanized iron is mainly processed externally, the paint should be harmless to the human body.
Adapted formulas
Do not apply oil paints to galvanized surfaces. This material, in contact with iron, triggers a chemical reaction that modifies the original properties of the product. Therefore, after application, the oil paint quickly begins to peel off.
Acrylic
There is a wide range of acrylic paints that differ in their composition. There are similar water-based or organic solvent-based products on the market.
When it comes to galvanized steel, alkyd compounds have no drawbacks. For the treatment of galvanized surfaces, which are used in extreme conditions (near open fireplaces, etc.), specialized acrylic paints are used.
alkyd
Some types of alkyd paints contain specialized components, due to which the treated material tolerates contact with fresh and salt water, chemicals and petroleum products.
Vinyl enamels
Vinyl enamels are superior to other compounds used for dyeing galvanized iron because these products are distinguished by the following characteristics;
- firmly react to temperature increases up to +90 degrees;
- form a durable layer;
- tolerate environmental influences, including rain, snow, and scorching sunlight;
- protect against mechanical damage.
The only drawback of vinyl enamels is the excessive price. These products are based on acrylic, which can be diluted with additional components. After drying, the composition forms a rubbery layer.
Popular products
Among the wide variety of electroplated paints, there are several products that are more popular with buyers. Such a limited choice is due to the fact that these formulations not only meet the above requirements, but also have a long shelf life.
National brands
Among domestic products, the Tsirkol mixture stands out. Under this brand, paints are produced, which, after drying, form a matte surface.
Under this brand, paints are produced in green, white, brown, gray and burgundy colors. This composition is distinguished by a long service life, withstands temperature drops and exposure to sunlight, and also has good adhesion. Due to these properties, the material can be applied in one coat without priming the pretreated surface. Zirkol paints can be used even at subzero temperatures. The material dries completely at 20 degrees for 18 hours.
In addition to "Zircoli", the composition of the brand "Nerzhalyuks" stands out among domestic products. This paint is based on acrylic copolymers, which provide increased resistance to corrosive processes. Also "Nerzhalyuks" is characterized by excellent adhesion properties. It is recommended to apply this enamel in three layers. In this case, the dried coating will last 10 years.
Foreign manufacturers
From foreign manufacturers of galvanized paints, it is recommended to take products of the Tikkurila and Hammerite brands. Both companies produce compounds ready for iron processing. These products are distinguished by the following characteristics:
- good adhesion to metal;
- create long-term protection against corrosion;
- forming a wear-resistant coating;
- wide palette of shades;
- the surface color does not change over several years with constant exposure to sunlight.
Unlike Russian Tsircoli, products of these brands require careful surface preparation. If there are traces of grease on the metal, the paint will begin to drip after application. Epoxy enamel is also produced under the Tikkurila brand, which does not require prior priming with iron.
How to choose the right composition
General requirements for galvanized paints are given above. These parameters should be taken into account when choosing a suitable composition. You should also pay attention to the following features:
- respect the environment;
- the ability to resist the effects of aggressive substances;
- lifetime;
- decorative properties.
In addition, it is recommended to consider the following circumstance: how the material changes color after drying. This feature is especially relevant in cases where the composition is purchased for processing decorative objects or for painting on individual parts of the structure.
Staining technology - step by step instructions
The general procedure for applying the paint, as well as the working conditions with the material, are indicated on the packaging with the composition. These recommendations should be considered when processing galvanized iron.
Preparatory work
Before painting, galvanized iron must be degreased with solvents and cleaned of contamination. It is recommended to keep the material in the fresh air for 24 hours. In this case, the metal will absorb oxygen, which will have a positive effect on the adhesion of zinc.
Also, to improve this property, it is recommended to treat the surface with abrasive compounds or a primer using the products of the same company as the paint.
Create a protective layer
It is also recommended to treat the metal with an alkaline detergent before painting. The latter will remove the remaining dirt and create an additional protective layer.
Paint
Stir the paint well before use.If indicated in the instructions, a suitable solvent should be added to this composition. Painting is done with a brush or roller. If large areas are being treated, it is recommended to carry out the procedure using a spray gun. The number of coats to be applied to the metal is indicated in the instructions (minimum 2). To get a rich paint color, this procedure can be done 3 or more times.
Precautionary measures
When performing internal and external work related to metal processing, the container with paint should not be placed next to open sources of fire. It is recommended to perform the procedure in a protective suit and goggles. When working in a closed room, provide constant air ventilation.
