Technical characteristics and composition of enamel KO-868, its scope of application
Organosilicon enamel KO-868 is characterized by increased fire resistance. This material provides protection and extends the life of metal products. The enamel tolerates strong temperature variations and dries quickly. However, the material gains strength when applied in several layers, which increases the consumption of the product.
Enamel KO-868 - technical properties
KO-868 enamel is a universal coating capable of protecting the treated surface from the effects of aggressive substances. This material is very resistant to:
- temperature fluctuations;
- saline solutions;
- gasoline;
- oils.
Organosilicon enamel differs from other similar products in that this material can be used to process not only metal, but also concrete, artificial stone and brick.
This product, due to the peculiarities of the scope of application, is produced in containers of 50 and 200 kilograms.
Composition and characteristics
Enamel KO-868 is a suspension of pigments and fillers based on silicone varnish.The product also contains xylene and solvents.
The technical characteristics of the enamel are given in the table:

Scope
This enamel is used to protect the metal from corrosion and heat. The material is used for processing:
- metal equipment;
- oil and gas pipelines;
- stoves used for waste incineration;
- engine and car body parts.
If necessary, paint and varnish coating can be used to process various metal products that regularly come into contact with aggressive substances.
Due to the peculiarities of the composition, it is recommended to use this enamel when processing stone, plaster or concrete products, if the latter are used in natural (atmospheric) conditions.In cases where such surfaces are exposed to high temperatures, a different paint should be used.
Advantages and disadvantages
The advantages of KO-868 enamel are:
- withstands temperature fluctuations over a wide range (from -60 to +600 degrees);
- resistant to water, petroleum products and saline solutions;
- can be applied at low temperatures;
- protects metal from corrosion;
- Suitable for processing stone and concrete.
Among the shortcomings of the hardware, the following can be distinguished:
- long drying period (up to three days);
- increased consumption requires three-layer application;
- liquid fire hazard;
- releases gases hazardous to health during the drying process.
Also, the disadvantages include the fact that the material is produced in large containers.
Requirements when working with paints and varnishes
When working with this material, it is necessary to comply with the general requirements of GOST for toxic and fire-hazardous paints. In particular, personal protective equipment should be worn, including respirators and goggles. In addition, it is prohibited to use the material near sources of naked flames and in rooms where ventilation is not provided. Before the first application, the enamel must be carefully positioned.
Coating drying time and durability
KO-868 enamel is applied in three layers every 2 hours. During this time, the coating has time to dry sufficiently so that the surface can be repainted.
The indicator of the strength of the coating, as mentioned above, depends on the type of exposure. On average, the material can withstand heating up to +600 degrees for three hours. With other types of exposure, the paint does not lose its original properties over a longer period.
Palette of shades
Enamel is available in the following colors:
- blue;
- Red;
- YELLOW;
- Green;
- White;
- gray;
- red-brown;
- Brown;
- black;
- money.
The enamel is produced ready to use. The material does not need to be mixed with additional pigments.
Material consumption calculator per square meter
Material consumption depends on the conditions and nature of the application. To process one square meter of a metal product exposed to temperatures up to +600 degrees, up to 130-150 grams of enamel will be required. When painting surfaces operated in less aggressive conditions, consumption increases to 150-180 grams.
The above parameters are calculated on the condition that the enamel is applied in one layer.
Application technology
You can apply KO-868 enamel:
- roll;
- paint sprayer;
- brush;
- embedding.
The paint is delivered ready to use. But before starting work, it is recommended to mix the material with a solvent (solvent or other) and check the viscosity of the composition.
Surface preparation
Prior to coating, the surface should be cleaned of:
- oils;
- fat;
- water-soluble salts;
- other contamination.
If there is rust, scale or old paint on the surface, these traces are removed by sandblasting or manually using sandpaper. This procedure is recommended regardless of the condition of the metal being treated.Thanks to this grout, the adhesion is increased and the heat resistance of the enamel is improved.
After completing the above manipulations, the surface should be wiped with a dry cloth.
Primer
KO-868 enamel does not require preliminary priming of the surface. However, this procedure should be carried out in cases where the processed material is heated to temperatures above +100 degrees.
Dyeing
It is possible to paint the surface with enamel at ambient temperatures from -30 to +40 degrees. Here it should be borne in mind that with negative values the drying time of the coating increases significantly.To apply enamel to large areas, a spray gun with a nozzle diameter of 1.8 to 2.5mm is used. In order for the material to be evenly distributed over the surface, the device should be kept at a distance of 200-300 millimeters.
Enamel should be applied in 2-3 layers, all of them should intersect. This way streaks and darker areas can be avoided. Before applying the next layer, you need to wait at least two hours (if the material heats up to a temperature of +100 degrees - 30 minutes), so that the previous one has time to gain strength.
The number of treatments also depends on future operating conditions. If the surface is exposed to temperatures up to +600 degrees, the thickness of the painted layer should be 30-35 micrometers; up to +100 degrees - 40-50 micrometers. When calculating this parameter, one should take into account the natural shrinkage of the paint by 20% during the first day.
When working with concrete, asbestos concrete, stone or plaster surfaces, a different approach is taken.In this case, the enamel should be applied in three layers.
If the treated material is still used in aggressive conditions, the surface after painting should be warmed up to a temperature of + 250-400 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
Final coverage
Enamel does not require a topcoat. This rule is especially important to observe in cases where metal is being treated which is exposed to high temperatures.
Security engineering
As noted, surfaces should be painted with enamel in well-ventilated rooms or in fresh air, away from open flames, and in personal protective equipment. At the end of the work, the rest of the material must be drained into a separate container and destroyed in specially designated places.
Shelf life of KO-868
The shelf life of the material is 12 months from the date of production. Open enamel cannot be stored for more than two hours.
Advice from the masters
For painting galvanized metal or aluminum products, it is recommended to use enamel KO-870. This compound has the same characteristics as KO-868, but adheres better to similar surfaces. However, after drying, there is no significant difference in the performance of the two coatings.
Despite the fact that KO-868 enamel is produced in a limited number of shades, if necessary, in the company that produces this product, you can order the tinting of the composition. But this procedure is carried out subject to ordering a large batch of paint.
To reduce material consumption, the original composition should not be diluted with a solvent. Due to this, the dried film will not gain sufficient strength, and the surface will not be protected from temperature and other effects. It is recommended to use direct hot air blowing or infrared heaters to dry the treated surface.
