Technical characteristics and composition of the VL-02 primer, rules of application
VL-02 primer is used to protect metal structures from rust. In some cases, this material can replace phosphating and oxidation. However, the scope of application of the VL-02 floor is limited due to the technical characteristics of this composition. The material is used to create temporary protection for a period of 2-3 weeks during the period when the metal structure is stored in a warehouse.
Composition and technical characteristics of the VL-02 floor
The basis of the primer is a semi-finished product, which is mixed with an acid thinner. The first component contains:
- pigments;
- filler in polyvinyl resin solution;
- volatile organic solvents.
This material belongs to the group of phosphating primers, which create an anticorrosive layer on the surface of metals of various types (iron, titanium, aluminum and others) and increase the adhesion of the paint and varnish coating.
To improve these characteristics, it is recommended to introduce aluminum powder into the composition of the initial mixture at the rate of 5 to 7% by volume.
The characteristics of the VL-02 primer are as follows:
- creates an impermeable layer;
- protects the surface from the effects of petroleum products and mineral oils;
- neutralizes acids and saline solutions;
- prevents negative consequences in case of exposure to electricity.
The VL-02 floor has the following technical characteristics:
Film appearance | Homogeneous with a matte or glossy sheen |
Conditional viscosity | 20-35 |
Fraction of volatile substances | 20-22 |
Grinding degree | 30 micrometers |
Drying time | 15 minutes |
Flexural elasticity | 1mm |
Impact resistance | 50 |
Due to the high concentration of volatile substances and the presence of the solvent in the composition, this floor is classified as a fire hazardous material. At the same time, due to the specified components and properties of the composition, the mixture can be used during work at industrial enterprises and in everyday life in any climatic zone.
Purpose and scope
VL-02 primer is intended to create a protective layer on the surface of the following metals:
- black;
- corrosion resistant;
- galvanized and cadmium steel;
- aluminum;
- the copper;
- magnesium and titanium alloy.
The material is used as a base for various paint and varnish coatings and putty applied to metal surfaces.
This mixture is applied to protect the vehicle body. Also, the material is used in shipbuilding and other industries.
Advantages and disadvantages of the material
The advantages of this floor are:
- long life expectancy;
- the ability to create a layer that protects against the effects of various aggressive substances, including salts and oil products;
- forms a protective layer against moisture;
- short curing period;
- Low consumption;
- suitable for use as a base for various paints and varnishes;
- the treated surface can be cut and welded.
Among the disadvantages of the primer are the following:
- high concentration of volatile and dangerous substances for the body;
- fire hazard;
- low coefficient of elasticity.
When working with a primer, it is necessary to ensure constant ventilation of the room. At the same time, the material dries even at room temperature in 15-30 minutes, which speeds up the finishing of metal structures.
VL-02 Soil Varieties
Many primers differ in the type of components that give the material additional properties. However, the VL-02 brand mixture always contains the same substances, regardless of the form of release and other conditions.
By composition, form of release and properties
This primer is produced in a special container that does not let air through. This mixture is divided into 2 types; VL-02 and VL-023. The difference between these compositions is that the first forms a protective layer against moisture, which lasts no more than 6 months, the second - up to three years. In terms of technical characteristics and other criteria, the two materials do not differ from each other.
By color variety
After drying, this primer forms a film with a matte or glossy sheen of a greenish-yellow tint. In this case, the color of the film can vary in a fairly wide range. This peculiarity is explained by the fact that the shade of the primer is not standardized. And the saturation of tone is determined by the number of layers applied.
Soil technology
Due to the fact that the VL-02 primer is a two-component composition, which is supplied as a set, the material must be thoroughly mixed before application.In addition, to create a protective layer that can withstand the effects of these factors, you must follow the rules for processing metal surfaces.
Calculation of material consumption
Soil consumption is determined based on:
- tasks to be solved by the selected composition;
- conditions of use (air temperature, humidity level, etc.);
- surface preparation quality;
- the staining method used;
- configurations of the metal structures treated and other factors.
On average, processing one square meter of metal surface in one layer requires 120-160 grams of the mixture.
Tools required
The type of tools used when priming metal surfaces is determined by the working conditions. To apply the material, the following are used:
- a broad base brush;
- roll;
- spray.
You also need a container for mixing the solvent and the original composition. Additionally, metal surfaces may require other tools or materials to prepare the structure for primer and paint applications.
To clean the brush or roller from the remnants of the mixture, RFG solvent is used. Xylene can be used for these purposes.
Surface preparation
You can prime the surface after removing:
- traces of rust;
- fat;
- old painting.
Sandpaper or a sander is used to remove the rust. Also for this you can use specialized compounds that clean traces of corrosion.
Gasoline, alcohol and other compounds are used to degrease the surface. It is recommended to remove paint from metal structures using suitable solvents.To increase the adhesion of the VL-02 floor to the treated surface, it is recommended to treat the latter with fine sandpaper.
Application methods
Before applying the primer, the original composition must be prepared according to the following algorithm:
- Mix the primer with an acid thinner in a separate container in a 1: 4 ratio.
- Stir the resulting composition continuously for 10 minutes.
- Let the mixture steep for 30 minutes.
At the end of the specified period, a thinner can be added to the finished mixture in order to achieve the desired degree of viscosity of the primer composition. This parameter is determined taking into account the type of tools used. If the primer is applied with a brush, the composition should be dense; if sprayed - liquid (but not more than 20% of the mass of the primer).
To dilute the finished mixture, it is allowed to use:
- solvents 648 and R-6;
- xylene;
- toluene.
Do not mix these solvents. This will change the properties of the primer.
To improve the characteristics of the material, you can also add aluminum powder to the finished mixture. Primer is applied in the same way as paints. When processing the surface, no gaps should be left.
The prepared mixture can be stored for 4 to 24 hours, depending on the ambient temperature. After the specified period, the material must be disposed of. It is allowed to apply primer VL-02 at temperatures from -10 to +30 degrees. The surface is treated with this mixture in 1 or 2 layers.
How long does VL-02 primer dry?
At a temperature of +20 degrees, the floor of this brand dries completely in 15 minutes. However, paint and varnish cannot be applied immediately.After the last coat dries, it is recommended to keep the primer on the surface for half an hour. After that, the material can be painted.
It is impossible to withstand VL-02 floor on metal for more than 14 days. After the end of this period, the surface must be retreated with this material, since the previous layer loses its protective properties after 2 weeks.
Errors when applying a primer
Errors in the use of a primer are mainly reduced to non-compliance with the rules for preparing the material. Often, when mixing, inappropriate solvents are used or the latter are added in a higher concentration, which leads to a deterioration in technical characteristics and a decrease in protective properties.
In order to avoid problems when processing metal structures, it is necessary to add thinner in an amount not exceeding 20% of the volume of the soil. Otherwise, the mixture will turn out to be too liquid, which will increase the consumption of material. In such circumstances, it is possible to sand the surface with sandpaper, thereby increasing the level of adhesion of the metal to the floor.
The second common mistake is non-compliance with the aging conditions of the composition. Wait at least half an hour before applying the paint. During this time, the primer will acquire the specified strength characteristics necessary to protect the metal from external influences.
Opinions and recommendations of the masters
Anatolia:
“The shelf life of VL-02 soil is one year. But the material is in limited demand, and therefore the manufacturer produces this mixture in large containers. Therefore, there are often offers on the market for the sale of expired primers. It is recommended to check the degree of viscosity and the presence of impurities before purchasing the material."
Semyon:
“Before applying VL-02 Primer to the surface at sub-zero temperatures, the material should be kept cold for several minutes. Otherwise, the protective layer will not gain sufficient strength."
