Advantages and disadvantages of Raptor paint, specifications and method of application
Raptor automotive paint gives the surface a rough appearance resembling orange peel. The coating has a dull sheen and small bumps. Unlike most paints, such a composition firmly adheres to the metal and reliably protects it from corrosion. The Raptor coating cannot be removed mechanically. The composition can be applied to an old paint.
Features and purpose of Raptor paint
Raptor is a two component automotive paint from U-POL Limited. You can purchase products from an auto parts store. The two components (paint and hardener) must be mixed before use. Instructions and proportions are written on the label. Sold as a set (4 pots of paint of 0.75 l each and 1 pot of hardener of 1 l).
One package of "Raptor" is enough to paint in 1 layer with an area equal to 10 square meters. A set costs around $100. A complete repaint of a car requires at least 2-3 packs.
Raptor dries within 60 minutes of application. It is recommended to apply to the surface by spraying.The spray gun (spray gun) is sold with the Raptor. The paint is applied to the surface in 2-3 layers. After drying, a rough matte finish (with pimples) is obtained.
The painted surface looks like grained leather. The level of roughness is regulated by the spray gun regulators.
Raptor is used for vehicle paint, paint and corrosion protection. Initially, the paint was produced to repair (touch up scratches) a truck body, which was intensively used and subjected to heavy loads. The Raptor roster has been successfully tested. Paint began to be used to cover scratches, scuffs that occur during operation on ordinary cars, as well as to protect metal surfaces from moisture penetration and mechanical damage.
Raptor is used by:
- for painting off-road vehicles and ordinary cars;
- for repair (touching up scratches and bare areas);
- to completely repaint the entire body of the car;
- to protect individual places from corrosion;
- to paint the internal elements (plastic or metal).
Raptor products contain polyurethane. This component gives the coating hardness, strength, water resistance and UV resistance. "Raptor" increases the level of mechanical protection, sound insulation. The painted surface is not afraid of scratches, water, corrosion, low or high temperatures, adverse weather conditions.
Color pallet
Raptor paints and varnishes are mainly available in two colors: black and white. You can achieve the desired shade using the dye. The selected color is added to the white paint.Using pigment, you can paint a car in green, gray, blue, red. It is forbidden to use acrylic pigments for dyeing.
Advantages and disadvantages of Raptor car paint
How to apply correctly
You can paint the car yourself, for example, in the garage. It is necessary to work with the Raptor compound in a respirator and with the doors open. You can entrust the painting of a car to a master. In this case, the paint will cost more.
Materials and tools needed
To color, you need the following tools and materials:
- primer (adhesion promoter) for plastic;
- two-component soil (acid, pickling) for metal;
- putty;
- paint and hardener;
- pigment;
- spray gun;
- brushes;
- degreasing solvents;
- tools for polishing and abrasive processing (sandpaper P80-P280);
- rags, sponges.
Preparation for staining
Before painting, the surface must be prepared, that is, cleaned of dirt and primed. After preparing the car, the composition is prepared. A hardener is added to the paint in a ratio of 3 to 1, that is, 250 ml of hardener is taken per 0.75 liters of paint.
If necessary, add pigment to the Raptor composition (5-10 percent of the total volume). To obtain a more liquid solution, add a solvent (15-20 percent of the total). The mixture is stirred in a jar for 2-3 minutes.
Surface preparation includes the following steps:
- remove dirt, dust, grease;
- clean places from rust;
- remove elements that are not suitable for painting (bumpers, headlight caps, mirrors);
- remove the layer of varnish and cracked paint;
- smooth out irregularities with mastic;
- places of deformation are straightened;
- are passed over the entire surface with emery paper (for better adhesion of the Raptor composition);
- the surface is treated with a solvent, then - with a primer;
- wait several hours until completely dry;
- stick on unpainted places with masking tape, cover with foil;
- put on a respirator and paint.
Painting technology
Automotive painting is carried out as follows:
- prepare the composition (paint, hardener and, if necessary, pigment and solvent);
- the mixture is well stirred;
- remove the lid, attach a spray gun to the jar with the finished composition;
- adjust the pressure (jet size);
- the finished mixture is used for 60 minutes;
- the painting is done with a spray gun, roller or brush;
- if a spray gun is used, it is recommended to spray paint from a distance of 40-50 cm;
- painting the interior parts of the body to test the texture (how the "Raptor" lands);
- paint the entire surface in one coat and wait 60 minutes for the paint to dry;
- paint over all places, leaving no gaps;
- after the first layer dries, the surface is painted once more;
- the optimal number of layers is 2 (two).
how dry
After applying the first coat to the surface, wait 60 minutes for it to dry. Then the car is repainted a second time. The application of 2 layers is done by spraying on the first. During drying, care must be taken that no water, dust and objects are deposited on the surface for 60 minutes. The disappearance of the stickiness to the touch occurs in 1 hour at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.
It is not recommended to drive the car until the paint is dry. In the first 72 hours after painting, care must be taken that the coating does not come into contact with water. Complete drying of the painted surface occurs within 5-7 days. Polymerization lasts 21 days. The first month after painting the car should be protected from moisture and dirt.
How to correctly calculate car paint consumption
The consumption of birds of prey depends on the area to be painted. Before buying paint, you need to do a calculation. It is important to know the length, width and height of the body.Calculate the area of each pearl. To do this, the length is multiplied by the width (S = A * B). The areas to be painted on each side of the vehicle are summarized.
As a rule, 8 liters or 2 Raptor sets are enough for a Niva car. The longer and higher the car, the higher the consumption. For a Toyota car you need to buy 3 packs or 12 liters of paint. The same amount of Raptor products is needed for most cars. The maximum amount of paint is 16 liters or 4 packets.
Precautions for work
Raptor is toxic and flammable. It is recommended to work with paint in a respirator, indoors (in the garage), with the doors open. You can paint a car in a closed box if there is ventilation.
It is forbidden to smoke or make fire during the painting. It is advisable to dye with a protective suit and rubber gloves. It is forbidden to inhale the vapors of the Raptor composition. If you don't feel well, you should stop painting and get out into the fresh air.
The composition may irritate the eyes. When staining, it is advisable to wear glasses.
The "Raptor" composition (from paint and hardener) is prepared just before use (at the time of staining). It is forbidden to store the remains of the mixture. Undiluted Raptor components can be stored in room temperature storage until the expiration date. You cannot store the Raptor outdoors. At a temperature of -18 degrees, the paint hardens. It is recommended that Raptor be used (in its unopened package) within 2 years of the date of manufacture.
How to remove paint
The Raptor coating is durable and tough.It is very difficult to remove it from the surface of the car. The painted layer cannot be removed with emery paper. It is forbidden to use a grinder with an abrasive wheel to remove paint. Such a tool can lead to a violation of the integrity of the surface of the car. To remove the Raptor coating, it is recommended to use a building hair dryer. This tool heats up a layer of paint and can be easily removed with a regular trowel.
Additional tips and tricks
It is desirable to activate Raptor (by adding hardener and pigment to the paint) for each cylinder separately. The activated composition should be used within 60 minutes of its preparation. You can dilute Raptor in the following proportions: 777 g of paint, 223 g of hardener, 50 g of pigment.
Tint is performed by adding the selected color to the white composition. The final color is independent of the original coating. The pigment is added to the composition at the very end, after the hardener. The use of a drying accelerator is not recommended. After each painting, the gun must be thoroughly cleaned of composition residues. After use, it is recommended to rinse the instruments with acetone. The optimal number of layers is 2 (two). Too thick a coating can crack.
