Technical characteristics of KO-870 enamel, consumption per m2 and methods of application

Organosilicon enamel KO-870 belongs to the group of heat-resistant dyes used to protect metal products. This product is mainly used in the processing of aluminum and galvanized iron. Despite the limitations of the colors in which the enamel is produced, this dye is tinted on request in production in the desired shade.

Characteristics of heat-resistant and anti-corrosion enamel KO-870

KO-870 enamel is characterized by the following characteristics:

  • tolerates the impact of petroleum products (gasoline, oil);
  • resistant to weathering and prolonged contact with water;
  • well tolerates intense temperature fluctuations;
  • protects the metal from corrosion.

In comparison with other similar products, KO-870 enamel is distinguished by the fact that after drying it retains its original characteristics at temperatures from -60 to +900 degrees.

In addition to metal, this stain can be applied to other materials: concrete, brick, plaster and stone.However, in this case, the resistance of the dried film to external factors will be low.

Enamel is used for painting ovens, heat and steam locomotives, special equipment and other products that are constantly exposed to aggressive and thermal effects. Also, the material is used for processing body parts.

Composition and form of release

KO-870 enamel is based on silicone varnish mixed with additives, pigments and additional fillers. The product is produced in liquid form in metal cans weighing 25 kilograms.

Drying speed and coating durability

The durability of the coating, which forms after the colorant dries and hardens, is (measured in hours):

  • 5 at temperatures from +400 to +700 degrees;
  • 100 when exposed to water;
  • 96 when exposed to saline solutions;
  • 72 in contact with petroleum products.

The material is also resistant to mechanical stress. In this case, the dye acquires the indicated characteristics only after complete drying. This process takes three days.

This procedure can be accelerated, provided that a special dryer is used. In such cases, the material acquires sufficient strength in 4-5 hours.

Storage conditions

The shelf life of the dye is 12 months from the date of manufacture. After opening the box, the dye should be used within hours. The rest of the material is dumped in appropriate containers and is subject to destruction.

Store the enamel away from heat sources and open flames at a temperature of 20 degrees. It is also recommended to keep the container out of direct sunlight to prevent the material from heating up.

Advantages and disadvantages of paint materials

The advantages of a paint and varnish product are:

  • resistance to water and aggressive substances, including salts;
  • resistance to temperature fluctuations from -60 to +700 degrees;
  • suitable for low temperature application (down to -30 degrees);
  • high crushing force;
  • do not crack;
  • long service life (up to 15 years).

Among the disadvantages of the product are the following:

  • toxicity due to the increased content of volatile substances (50% of the enamel volume);
  • requires surface preparation;
  • increased consumption;
  • long drying time for each layer.

Among the disadvantages of KO-870 enamel, one can also highlight the fact that the characteristics of the product (including the heat resistance index) depend on the type of pigment used.

Nuances and recommendations for selection

The choice of enamel shade directly depends on the field of application of the material. When purchasing this coverage, you should consider the following features:

  • for black enamel, the heat resistance rating is 400, 600, and 700 degrees;
  • white - 300;
  • gray - 400;
  • silver gray - 650;
  • red - 500;
  • blue - 300;
  • blue - 300;
  • yellow - 300;
  • green has 400.

The degree of coverage or material consumption depends on the shade. For white, this figure is 110 grams per square meter, while for black it is 80.

Application methods

You can apply the enamel with a roller, spray gun or brush. The material is produced in a ready-to-use form. But before applying, the composition must be stirred until a homogeneous structure.

Surface preparation

Before applying the enamel to the metal, the surface is not primed. In this case, before starting the procedure, you must:

  • remove burrs and other surface defects;
  • degrease the material with xylene, toluene or solvents;
  • remove old paint, scale and rust;
  • clean the metal with an abrasive or sand it (this increases the adhesion of the enamel);
  • wipe the surface dry.

After preparation, the metal should be painted within six hours or days if the work is done indoors.

Dye technology

It is recommended to apply paint and varnish materials at a temperature of -30 to +40 degrees and a relative humidity of not more than 80%. The surface to be treated should be heated to 0-40 degrees.

For painting large areas, it is recommended to use a gun with a nozzle with a diameter of 1.8-2.5 mm. Keep the device at a distance of 200 to 300 millimeters from the work surface.

Metal products are painted in three layers:

  • the first is dried in 5-7 minutes;
  • the second - for 30 minutes at a temperature of +130 degrees;
  • the third - for four hours in a drying cabinet or at a temperature of +20 degrees.

It is recommended to cross the layers with each other so that dark and light spots do not appear on the surface. You can use or transport painted products after three days.

The last step

The applied enamel does not require additional treatment or varnishing. Once the coating has dried, the treated product is ready for use.

Drying

KO-870 enamel does not require additional impact for hardening. However, there is an exception to this rule.

If the treated metal is subsequently exposed to aggressive substances or high temperatures, the material must be heat-hardened. For this you need:

  • Withstand metal at a temperature of +20 degrees for one hour.
  • Gradually increase the exposure temperature, bringing it to the maximum value (but not more than 750 degrees).
  • Resist metal under such conditions for three hours.

With this procedure, you can increase the temperature by 5 degrees every minute. The thickness of the coating after drying should be 25-35 micrometers, taking into account that the enamel sags by 20% during the first day.

Enamel consumption per square meter

As noted, the material consumption depends on the type of pigment mixed with the original silicone varnish. On average, 130-150 grams of dye are required to process one square meter of surface. EIf the metal or other material is not exposed to the effects of temperature, the consumption increases to 150-180 grams.

Precautionary measures

The enamel contains solvents which ignite on contact with an open flame. Also, these components cause body intoxication. Therefore, when painting surfaces, it is necessary to wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator and goggles, and to provide supply and exhaust ventilation.
