Description and purpose of mosaic murals, the 4 best brands and how to apply them
Mosaic painting is a new invention for interior decoration. The innovative coating differs from plain paint, liquid, vinyl wallpaper with a print, photo wallpaper and textured plaster, but combines their decorative properties. Using mosaic paint for the walls, they create an imitation of stone, sand, water, wood, depict the starry sky. In this case, you do not need to play with glue and select a pattern. The multicolored decor is a fresh and bright accent among the plain walls.
Features of composition
Mosaic paint is a type of multicolor paint that includes two or more pigments. The idea of mixing colors in a composition appeared in the middle of the last century and belongs to Italian decorators. Differences in the composition of mosaic painting:
- contains microcapsules with latex-colored fillers;
- the base is monochromatic, aqueous-acrylic;
- different shapes and sizes of capsules.
The pigments are not mixed in the pot, but when colored, the capsule shells are destroyed.A rough coating forms on the wall with colorful spots in the form of stars, ovals, rhombuses, squares, raindrops and spots. The shape of the inclusions follows the shape of the capsules. Thanks to the latex, the surface of the coating looks like rubber, it is elastic when pressed.
Appointment
The mosaic coating can be applied to most supports:
- concrete;
- brick;
- in wood;
- plasterboard;
- metal;
- glass.
The multicolored paint is safe for the environment and people; it is used for interior work in residential, office and public buildings. The coating is suitable for decorating ceilings and walls.
Advantages and disadvantages
Mosaic paint does not smell of chemicals, dries quickly and does not require dilution with special chemical solvents. The multicolored design hides the defects of the walls. Damaged areas of the abstract design are easily restored.
Application rules
Precautions to be taken when using a multi-color formulation:
- temperature regime for stirring and coloring - 10-35 degrees Celsius;
- dilute the paint with water, its amount should not exceed 5-10% of the volume of the bucket;
- do not exceed the proportion during work;
- stir by hand, gently so as not to damage the coloring capsules;
- ventilate the room during work;
- when spraying the composition, wear protective glasses and a respirator so that the pigment particles do not get into the respiratory tract and eyes.
Stirring with a high-speed drill will damage the composition. As a result, the walls will not be covered with small curly spots, but with brown spots.
Preparatory work
The walls of new buildings often do not need to be leveled. However, their color may not match the base tone of the paint. Therefore, you can not do without a colored primer.
Walls and ceilings, which have worked more than once, are prepared according to the usual scheme:
- remove wallpaper, old paint, remove traces of glue, dirt and rust;
- large cracks are putty;
- level the surface with emery, a grinder;
- started.
Antibacterial and anti-corrosion compounds are applied to wooden and metal bases. Porous bricks and drywall are glued with a primer. Manufacturers of multi-colored paints produce impregnations specifically for them.
White or colored water-dispersion paint is applied under a multi-colored coating with a transparent base and colored spots. A primer is enough for a saturated background. The pattern of the old mosaic finish is easy to change - apply a new one on top.
Dyeing
Depending on the size of the surface to be decorated, use a spray gun or hand paint.
Manually
To paint the wall yourself with multi-colored paint, use rollers:
- polymeric, coarse-pored, with a synthetic pile of medium length - for an even coat;
- long hair - for a rough texture;
- with a short nap - to simulate a stone pattern.
The uneven coating is corrected half an hour after staining: gently spread on the surface using a spatula. The spatula also gives direction to the pattern, guiding the tool to one side or randomly.
Using a spray bottle
Painting with a spray gun is more economical and easier than with a roller.
Standard recommendations:
- direct the stream perpendicular to the wall at a distance of 40 centimeters;
- nozzle hole diameter - 2 mm;
- the minimum pressure is 0.2 atmospheres.
The main parameters can be increased or decreased.
Multi-colored paint is applied in one layer. But, in order to increase the strength of the coating, two layers are applied. In this case, the spray jet on the first layer is directed from top to bottom, and on the second - from left to right.
Completion
Mosaic paint drying steps:
- after 3-4 hours - the dust does not stick;
- 7 a.m. - surface freezes;
- 24 hours - complete solidification.
Final hardening sometimes takes 48 hours or 7 days, depending on the type of support and the ambient temperature. Gloss can be added to dried colored surfaces by coating them with a water-based polyurethane varnish. In rare cases, the exterior walls are decorated with mosaic painting, and also varnished.
Major brands
Well-known manufacturers of paints and varnishes have already expanded their assortment with mosaic paints.
The names and main characteristics are shown in the table:
Name | Maximum nozzle opening diameter in millimeters | Ultimate pressure in atmospheres | Maximum distance to surface | Consumption in grams per square meter |
Tintoflex | 2,2 | 2 | 50 | 350 |
"Trimkolor" | 3 | 2,5 | 50 | 250 |
Millicolor | 2,5 | 3 | 40 | 330 |
Multimix | 2,8 | 0,7 | 50 | 500 |
To decide on the purchase, it remains to compare the advantages and disadvantages of the formulations.
Tintoflex
The multi-colored coating from the Russian company Clavel is presented in three colors: pastel, monochrome and contrast.
A special primer is applied under the multi-color Tintoflex coating, which is painted in the color of the paint background.
"Trimkolor"
The Russian manufacturer of paint materials - "Trimstroy LLC", offers its own version of mosaic coating.
In the open air, under the varnish of the same manufacturer, the coating can withstand frost at -40 degrees.
Millicolor
Additional decorative elements have been added to the original Franco-Italian mosaic tiles.
The paint is presented in two series - "Revival" and "Standard". Thickened paint should be wiped off and then mixed.
Multimix
The mosaic floor is produced under the Bayramiks brand, owned by the Russian company Interra Deco Group. The manufacturer is famous for being the first to introduce marble plaster to the domestic market of paint materials.
The maximum allowable spray pressure is 0.7 atmospheres.
Storage conditions and periods
Mosaic paint deteriorates in sub-zero temperatures. When frozen, the composition hardens, capsules with pigments break off. During storage, the following rules are observed:
- carry warm;
- observe the temperature regime + 5 ... + 32 degrees;
- tightly close the lid of the bucket;
- avoid heating and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
The shelf life of the composition in the original sealed packaging is 1 year.
With proper storage and agitation, multicolored paint will not spoil the appearance of the wall. It is one of the best flexible coatings for experimenting with color and texture.
