How to wash and care for a multi-material wig at home
Wigs are rarely made from real hair - they are already very expensive products; on sale you can often find high-quality, but artificial ones. This does not mean that they do not need maintenance - on the contrary, the fibers will get confused, dirty and deteriorate if they are not cleaned in any way at rest. It is advisable not only to wipe or shake these products, but to wash them. How to properly wash a wig is just below.
How to properly wash wigs?
It does not matter whether it is a stage wig or necessary to hide appearance flaws - it requires proper care and storage. Apart from its obvious protection against insects, humidity and sunlight (otherwise it will burn), it needs cleaning. Otherwise, the hair or fibers will become saturated with dust and, with it, its unpleasant smell. An already dusty wig cannot be worn - it is unpleasant, not aesthetically pleasing and can cause allergies.
Washing a natural hair wig
Natural hair products are best washed in much the same way as caring for real hair.Of the products, ordinary products for washing hair - shampoos and conditioners - are suitable. The latter is optional, but after that the wig, like real hair, will be softer, it will become better to imitate. It can only be washed by hand.
What do we have to do:
- First, untangle the wig, straighten the hardened strands. If there is none, comb it anyway with a comb.
- Wet it gently with a medium-strength faucet or shower until completely wet.
- Add shampoo and massage into hair, simulating real shampoo.
- Rinse the soapy foam several times - the absence of traces of soap and dust in the flowing water can be considered an indicator of cleanliness. Shake lightly, but never twist your hair when wringing it out.
- You can now apply conditioner, if desired, from roots to ends.
- Lightly blot the wig with a towel or toilet paper, just to keep water from running out. There is not much you can do for drying yet.
The main thing is to be careful. Human hair wigs are expensive, so they are of high quality, but you still need to handle them very carefully.
Synthetic Hair Wig Wash
Washing a fiber wig the same way as a natural wig won't work - an attempt to soap it up will end in a mess of artificial hair and possibly a spoiled product. During washing (only by hand), it is better not to touch it with your hands - just prepare water and detergents. Simple shampoos will do, but it's better not to get cheap ones - "borrow" your product.
What do we have to do:
- Prepare water - it should be hot, but not boiling water, similar to standard bathing water.
- Now add shampoo. 2-3 portions will be enough for regular hair washing, it all depends on the size of the wig. Use your hands or something else to agitate the water well.
- Carefully remove the wig from the stand and submerge it completely under water. Very long, scenic, you can wrap yourself in rings or just find a larger container. It should stay that way for at least 15-20 minutes.
- After that, the wig should be rinsed. It is recommended to prepare a separate container for this with warm water without soap, but it is not necessary - it is enough to run hot water from the tap, without strong pressure.
- After the dust and soap are removed, you can only wet the product (you cannot twist, shake, squeeze).
A tangled fake wig is very difficult to untangle, it is better not to allow it - knots can form, and with careful combing, the fibers break. The likelihood of such an outcome depends on the quality, and therefore the cost of the product.
How to dry and apply?
Wigs can be styled with a hair dryer. Some salons even offer such services, which are similar to the work of a hairdresser with real hair. At home it won't be worse.
It is enough to comb the wig with a hair dryer (it is better to use the cool or medium-hot mode, so as not to damage the fasteners). Since it is a higher quality thing than the artificial, it is much stronger. Natural hair dries quickly, so it won't take long.
Artificial ones require extra care when handling. The fibers break easily and take a long time to dry.Cheap items can even start to melt from the hair dryer's high heat setting, so it's best to turn on the hair dryer soft and cool right away.
It's best to completely dry the wig before combing it, especially if it's slightly tangled - wet fibers will stick together even more.
Checking if the wig is dry is simple. Run your hand over its surface - there shouldn't even be a hint of moisture, and also feel the "roots" with your fingers. There are no traces of water at the base, not even remotely. If this is neglected, the product can rot, mold and even heat rot if not noticed in time. Even if you keep the product after that, the smell will probably remain.
Which wig is the easiest to maintain?
This applies to both natural and artificial. Light shades get dirty more - on a blonde wig, for example, dust and stains will be clearly visible. The same goes for the multi-color scene options. Products of dark shades, in turn, fade faster.
brown wig
This natural color is very popular with manufacturers and buyers - it is one of the most common in the world. It's easy to care for, as it's dark enough that its owner won't track down the smallest stains, and light enough to withstand several years of moderate sun exposure.
black wig
It is not afraid of stains, but the dust on it can be clearly traced, especially in the sun. This last circumstance also strongly influences fiber depletion. Black is a rich, even color, so even the slightest tarnish will significantly reduce its aesthetic value.When buying a black wig, you should immediately take care of the storage space.
Brown or light brown wig
Such products look the most natural, so slight dulling is unlikely to be noticed by outsiders, light brown has many shades - thanks to this, the owner of the wig will be able to wear it longer. But stains and dirt like dust will show up - regular maintenance is still necessary.
Rules of care
Washing should be done at least once every six months. Even though it's on a stand in the closet, dust still collects there. An additional protective measure can be special cellophane and plastic bags for clothes and hats, but even then it is necessary to take them out for wet cleaning, but not often - once a year.
For ease of maintenance and storage, the wigs are left on stands - this is aesthetically pleasing when it comes to collection and practical. This way they take up less space and keep their shape. You can use the same simple tools for these purposes as for ordinary hairstyles - bobby pins or rubber bands, if you want to make a ponytail / ponytail pig.
Storage rules
You can store it in a dry place at room temperature, where the product will not be damaged by the humidity of the open space and direct sunlight - most cabinets will meet all of these criteria.
You can put glass cabinets, but with care - watch the sun - the process of burning hair or fibers occurs quickly and imperceptibly.
