Technical characteristics and composition of KO enamel at number 42, how to apply it
KO enamel numbered 42 is used for anti-corrosion treatment of metal surfaces in direct contact with liquids. Used to paint steel containers. Provides protection for hot and cold potable water supply equipment. The paint is made from environmentally friendly raw materials. Therefore, it will not harm the human body.
Description and peculiarities of enamel
When painting containers used to store food and liquids, special paint is used. It must be approved for use in the food industry. This is exactly what the KO-42 is. This enamel will not harm a person or animal in contact with it.
KO-42 is an environmentally friendly material for the production of paint and varnish. The main container in which it goes on sale is a container weighing 1, 15 and 50 kg. The paint is waterproof, easily tolerates being in water. Enamel can withstand temperatures from minus 60 to plus 300 degrees. Thus, staining can be performed even with negative thermometer readings.
Apps
The analogue of KO-42 enamel is KO-42T paint.The instructions indicate that this material provides protection against corrosion in cases where it is applied to a surface in contact with water.
It is applied:
- when applied to containers used during transport and subsequent storage of various types of raw materials, including food;
- to protect tanks, various containers and tanks in which liquids, including drinking water, are transported;
- in shipbuilding and in the operation of maritime transport.
When the surface is covered with enamel KO-42 in the 4th layer, the service life of the paint and varnish material will be at least 3 years.
Composition and specifications
The enamel consists of two components: zinc powder and ethyl silicate, used as a binder. The composition also contains such polymeric substances as vinyl acetate, plasticizers and vinyl chloride.
Among the main technical characteristics:
- coating color - gray;
- appearance - matte;
- the required number of layers to be applied - 4;
- enamel drying time - 20 min. at a temperature of plus 20-22 degrees;
- water resistance comes in 96 hours at a temperature of 20 degrees with a "+" sign;
- the amount of paint required for 1 square meter - 250-330 grams;
- elasticity - 3 millimeters.
Distinguish enamel by type KO-42 and KO-42T. They are very similar to each other in many ways, but there are still differences.
KO-42
This paint and varnish material, in most cases, is used in places where it is expected that the metal surface may come into contact with cold or hot water.
KO-42T
This enamel differs from the similar version in its heat resistance. The paint is applicable for painting pipelines and is able to withstand temperatures below 100 degrees with a plus sign for a long time.
For the enamel to set well, it is best to check it 5-6 days after application.
Advantages and disadvantages
KO-42 paint has excellent performance properties, withstands sudden temperature changes and has a uniform consistency. The difficulty of its use lies only in the need to mix the components. If the paint is too thick, it can interact with the solvent.
How to apply correctly
Too thick paint can be thinned with pure ethyl alcohol. Its share in the total volume of raw materials should not exceed 5%.
Coaching
Before applying the enamel, the surface must be prepared. The metal base is cleaned. Get rid of old paint stains, rust and dirt. Use sandpaper for cleaning. In some cases, sandblasting is used. If necessary, the surface is degreased.
This is done with toluene, xylene.After 6 hours, you can proceed to the next stage of work.
The preparation also includes mixing the base with zinc powder in a ratio of one to two. All air bubbles will disappear within half an hour. Ethyl alcohol or acetone in an amount of 5% of the total mixture will give the enamel the right degree of viscosity.
Application
Painting is carried out only after the cleaned surface is completely dry. During working hours, the air temperature should be between 15 and 40 degrees with the "+" sign, and the air humidity should not exceed 80%. The paint is applied using a pneumatic gun at a distance of 10 to 20 centimeters from the metal surface.
3-4 coats of paint are applied to the base. After each of them, 20-30 minutes should pass. The final polymerization will take place only after 7 days. At negative temperatures, the drying time of enamel increases by 2-3 times.
Precautions for work
Paint is a toxic substance. Therefore, when working with it, you must observe safety measures and protect the respiratory organs with respirators. It is best to wear gloves on your hands. Enamel, which contains solvents, is fire-hazardous, so contact with fire should be avoided during work. Smoking inside is not recommended.
Storage conditions and periods
Enamel can be stored in an unopened container for up to 6 months. It must be stored in its original packaging, protected from humidity and direct sunlight.
