How to paint the bark beetle correctly, the choice of composition and roller and the problems
The painting of plaster, reminiscent of the movements of bark beetles, is done in several ways. The pigment is added to the pasty mixture before coating the wall. After tinting the plaster, the paint can be discarded. True, for additional surface protection it is better to use a coloring composition. The bark beetle can be painted with different colors. The type of composition is chosen depending on the operating conditions (for the facade or interior walls).
What kind of bark beetle is it and why paint it
Bark beetle is the name of a decorative plaster that is used to decorate the facades of houses and sometimes inside an apartment. It is very easy to distinguish this building material from others. The plaster imitates the wood in which the bark beetle has made many moves.
Despite the texture, creating a decorative pattern is not difficult. Plaster (the most economical option) is sold dry, diluted with water before work and applied to the wall with a spatula. Then the plastered surface is leveled and rubbed with a plastic trowel or a polystyrene foam trowel. The plaster contains hard marble chips.During grouting, it moves and forms grooves on the softer coating.
The decoration of bark beetle movements has a number of useful features. The coating is not afraid of scratches, weathering. Small cracks are invisible on it. Manufacturers produce several types of bark beetles.
The basic color of the plaster is white or gray. If desired, the surface smeared with a bark beetle is painted with paint. The type of paint and varnish material should match the type of plaster. For example, an acrylic bark beetle is painted with acrylic paint.
Reasons for painting plaster with paint:
- improves the appearance of the bark beetle, gives it the desired shade;
- allows to highlight several zones on the wall (border around windows, doors);
- protects the surface from moisture;
- creates an anti-soiling effect;
- strengthens the foundation.
The only drawback of applying paint to the bark beetle is the additional financial costs. The plaster itself is not cheap, moreover you will have to spend money on the purchase of a coloring composition.
What paint is needed
The choice of paint depends on the type of decorative plaster. The color of the dye composition is chosen to your taste or chosen from the range offered. It is better to buy paint for painting the bark beetle, which creates a protective layer against moisture, but lets steam and air through. Under such a film, the plaster will not get wet and will not soften.

Rules and subtleties of painting
The coloring of the bark beetle has a number of characteristics. There are several ways to change the original look and color of the plaster. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Initial tincture
Before plastering the wall, it is allowed to tint the pasty plaster, that is, to add pigment. This service is provided by stores selling bark beetles. Colored plaster does not need to be painted. The pigment will saturate the whole mixture and give the surface a certain tint.
If desired, after a few weeks, when the bark beetle is completely dry, the wall can be painted with a contrasting base paint using a short-haired roller (without pressing the tool hard on the surface). Only the upper part will be colored and the grooves will retain their original color.
Double painting
The gray plaster is treated with a primer one month after it is applied to the wall. Wait at least 24 hours for the floor to dry. The bark beetle is painted with the selected paint in two layers. All grooves and grooves are painted. For painting, use a spray gun or brushes. When the coating is completely dry, 1-2 layers of contrast paint are applied to the wall. A short-haired roller is used for painting. The tool is not pressed firmly against the wall. With this method of staining, the paint will not fall into the grooves. The bark beetle will be colored in two colors.
Use a primer
You can paint the bark beetle with a primer. Previously, this tool must be tinted, that is, add pigment to the transparent liquid. The entire surface of the bark beetle, including the grooves, is treated with a colored primer.
When dry, the wall will look horrible. However, applying a primer is only the first step.
The primer will color the grooves, protect the plaster and improve adhesion. After the colored primer dries, a contrasting paint is applied to the surface using a short-haired roller (without pressing the tool to the base). Once dry, a unique appearance is obtained: grooves of one color and the main surface of another.
Potential problems and difficulties
Difficulties may arise when staining the bark beetle. It is advisable to think in advance what paint the plaster will be painted with.If double painting is planned, it is recommended to immediately purchase two colors of paints. The main background and the shadow of the grooves should be in harmony with each other. If the plaster is tinted in a bright red color, then it is undesirable to use a blue composition on top. The colors of the bark beetle and the paint should be consistent with each other.
It is forbidden to paint wet plaster. It dries longer than paints, on average 2 to 4 weeks. If you rush and paint the wet bark beetle, the painting will fall behind. We will have to remove the layer with the plaster. The bark beetle texture will be damaged and destroyed.
The easiest way is to paint the plastered wall with acrylic using a single color paint sprayer. True, before using the paint, you need to order a tint in the store. You can add the pigment yourself to the acrylic dispersion and mix well. The dye should color the entire mixture evenly. Construction mixers are used for uniform mixing.
