Top 5 Ways to Remove Gloss From Paint and Make It Matte
Gloss paints create an attractive shine on the treated surfaces and visually increase the volume of space. However, these characteristics limit the range of the material. In particular, glossy surfaces get dirty easily, i.e. fingerprints constantly remain on the processed material. Under such circumstances, questions often arise as to how you can make the paint matt and whether it is possible to remove the specified gloss.
When to remove gloss
Similar issues arise due to the nature of glossy paint. You need to remove unnecessary shine if:
- the paint was used in the decoration of rooms exposed to the sun;
- the surface on which the material is applied was poorly processed (wall defects appear);
- they are constantly in contact with the treated surface (fingerprints remain, etc.);
- the painted surface is regularly subjected to mechanical stress.
Matte paints are more durable than gloss paints. However, this property depends more on the characteristics of the composition of the finishing material.
Basic methods
Mistakes made when decorating the premises can be eliminated by removing the old material and applying a new one.But when it comes to painting, you can get rid of gloss using three simple methods.
Mechanical
To remove the glossy sheen, it is necessary to treat the painted surfaces with a soft sanding accessory. In this case, it is recommended to use specialized equipment (grinder). When performing this operation, consider the following:
- When grinding, a lot of fine dust gets into the air. Therefore, work should be carried out in a ventilated area, wearing personal protective equipment (including a respirator).
- When grinding, it is not possible to achieve a uniform matte texture, which worsens the appearance of the painted surface.
- After sanding, the dust will settle more quickly on the walls.
Due to these circumstances, it is recommended to apply the sanding method when removing gloss in small areas.
Opening
To turn a glossy surface into a matte one, the varnishing method is often used. In this case, the work should be done before the last coat of paint dries. In addition to the finishing material, you need to apply a matte varnish to achieve the desired shade.
It is not recommended to carry out this procedure after the last coat has dried. Gloss dye will crack over time. Also, before applying matte varnish, it is necessary to clean the surface from dust and dirt.
Gasoline treatment
This option is allowed to be used in a ventilated area in which there are no sources of fire. Work must be carried out with a respirator and gloves.
To remove shine, it is necessary to process the entire surface with a rag soaked in gasoline.After the procedure, the walls should be rinsed several times with clean water, then sanded with fine sandpaper.As with sanding, it is not always possible to achieve an even matte finish with gasoline .
homemade painting
To get rid of the shiny sheen, you can make your own paint. This option is considered more effective compared to the previously described ones, since it allows you to get a composition that can fall evenly on the surface. To obtain the required material, you must first mix matte and glossy paints. The proportions in this case are selected depending on the desired result.
How to make matte acrylic paint
To get a matte paint from acrylic, you need to mix the original composition with:
- Crushed chalk used for whitewashing. Before mixing, this component must be sieved through a fine sieve to exclude third fractions. Then the chalk should be gradually introduced into the acrylic paint. At the same time, the composition must be mixed in order to avoid the appearance of sediment. To achieve the desired result, it is recommended to take chalk and acrylic paint in a ratio of 1:10. If the specified proportion is exceeded, the original composition will be whiter than necessary.
- Rice flour. It is recommended to take a fine grind.
- Tooth powder for children. This tool makes it possible to obtain a mattifying effect due to the presence of chalk dissolved in the composition. Talc is also found in children's dental powders, thanks to which the future mixture will lie evenly on the surface.
- Wax or paraffin. This option is recommended more often than the others. To get a matte paint, you need to melt the wax (paraffin) over low heat, and then add it to the acrylic composition.At this stage, it is also recommended to constantly stir the paint.
Paints obtained by mixing these components are recommended to be applied to the walls using brushes or rollers. The use of sprayers in this case is inconvenient. These mixtures contain impurities that quickly clog spray gun nozzles.
The methods described can be used in combination with certain formulations. In particular, to turn acrylic paint into a matte paint using the listed components, materials should be used that do not change their characteristics when exposed to high temperatures.
Matt paint technology
Matte paints are applied according to the same algorithm as glossy paints. Problems arise when the previously mentioned mixtures are used for surface treatment. This is due to the fact that after adding additional components to the acrylic, the dye, due to the difference in density, rises or falls.
Therefore, the composition must be constantly mixed in order to maintain the characteristics of the working solution.
It is recommended to apply a small amount of material to an inconspicuous area prior to surface treatment. This will allow you to select the appropriate proportion of the original components. For painting the walls, use a small amount of the mixture, preparing a new solution each time.
Before applying the material, it is also necessary to prepare the surfaces by removing dirt and traces of grease. At the same time, the walls do not need to be carefully leveled, since the matte stain is able to hide minor flaws.It is recommended to apply the material with a paint roller, moving from top to bottom or from left to right.
